For many, football is a passion or a way of life and the suspension of all league matches came as devastating news. For some, it is a measure that is likely to threaten their livelihood. Clubs, particularly in Leagues One and Two, are heavily dependent on matchday income and the loss of it is threatening jobs and putting their businesses into a precarious financial position.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has confirmed that government support will be available to football clubs affected by Covid-19, including business rates reliefs and grants.

The English Football League has also announced a £50m relief package for clubs which will involve the early distribution of remaining TV and sponsorship money ordinarily paid to clubs at the end of the season, as well as loans against next season’s initial payments.

Whilst a boost to short-term cash flow, it remains to be seen what will be done to secure the long term financial future of those clubs at risk.
